We live in a world where Education does not guarantee much anymore. There are people who have successful careers with little to no formal education, while others struggle with a degree. These are the main things you need to consider, before taking a decision regarding your future:
What are you good at?
If you did not find your talent yet and you can’t take a decision, ask yourself this: what is the one thing that all your friends ask your help with? It could be writing, a life advice, math or their art project. This could give you a starting point.
How do you see your future?
It’s easy to imagine yourself as successful and happy. However, you need to be clear about your expectations and desires when it comes to your daily life. Some jobs are more exhausting than others. Sure, when you think about becoming a surgeon it can feel incredible, but this means that you will have to spend many years studying and that you will, most likely, never have an active social life. Is this something you feel comfortable with?
Don’t over or underestimate yourself
When you make such an important decision, you have to be completely honest with yourself. For example, you may have high marks now, but it took you a lot of time and effort and you may not be able to give up your free time in the future.
Similarly, you can be completely in love with arts, but you might not have the necessary talent. Your close family and friends may help you shed some light over this, if you ask them for their honest opinion regarding your abilities.
Can you easily find a job?
Let’s be realistic: it is important to love your career, but at the same time you have to be able to support yourself and your family. There are many colleges out there that can’t guarantee you that you will find a well-paid job after graduation.
Sure, if you work hard and you improve yourself continuously, you will have financial success. However, if this is one of your main priorities, you should stay away from careers that require years before they take off. Also, there are many jobs where the competition is very high, and you need to be one of the best in order to make significant amounts of money.
